Damage to Manawatu Gorge

Two staff members from the InSPire Net / OurRegion team were today treated to a jet boat ride through the Manawatu Gorge to survey the damage caused by slips during February.

The ride was provided courtesy of James Stewart from Hiwinui Jet, a division of Hiwinui Country Estate.

Several large slips covered large portions of road and damaged road safety barriers.

Contractors are employing heavy machinery to remove slips and rebuild damaged roads.

A Helipro helicopter is using monsoon buckets to wash away loose material above the slips.

Contractors are also working at repairing a slip below the Balance
Bridge.

The Manawatu Gorge is not expected to be opened for a several months as slips must be cleared, and roads and barriers rebuilt.
