Discover the hidden world & inhabitants of our southern ocean Open 10am - 4pm Daily, from Fri 17 May - Sun 4 Aug In 2012, Gareth Morgan led a group of 50 New Zealanders on a journey to the Southern Ocean. The exhibition is mirrored, at children's eye level with images of Shackleton Bear, who went on the voyage too. Children of all ages will love this voyage of discovery, as Shackleton encounters the wildlife and wonders of this special part of the world. Images by Bob Zuur & John McCrystal. Reel Earth International Environmental Film Festival presents Academy Award Nominee: If a Tree Falls by Marshall Curry & Sam Cullman (USA, 2010, 87min) Environmentalists. Terrorists. In December 2005, Daniel McGowan was arrested by Federal agents in a nationwide sweep of radical environmentalists, the Earth Liberation Front – a group the FBI labelled America’s “number one domestic terrorism threat.” For years, the ELF had launched spectacular arsons against dozens of businesses they accused of destroying the environment. This Academy Award Nominee film tells the remarkable story of how one ordinary person was transformed into a radical environmentalist. Part coming- of-age tale, part cops-and-robbers, along the way it asks hard questions about environmentalism, activism, and the way we define terrorism. Daniel McGowan is due for parole in June 2013. + My Forest (Ma Foret) Sebastien Pins (Belgium, 2013, 7min) A child’s view of travel throughout the forest. Discover its magic, its mysteri…

The centre piece of the exhibition is Barcode, an installation featuring 77 ceramic ‘huia skins', created as a commentary on the extinction of our native birds. Other works are make-believe species of vanished birds, inspired by the sort of fantastic creatures found in cabinets of curiosities, in days gone by. Kirsty Gardiner was the winner of the "Premier Award" in the 2010 Portage Ceramic Awards and the "Merit Award" winner of the 2011 Portage Ceramic Awards with her artwork. This month Zimmerman is displaying examples of the wide range of artworks produced by the Dibble Studio. The exhibition features works by Paul Dibble, Fran Dibble, and collaborative works from the Dibble Studio. Paul Dibble Works Four works by Paul feature in the exhibition; two of his older works from the 2007 Maui series, and two new studies, made especially for this exhibition. The new works contain depictions of rural churches, small celebrations of New Zealand’s rural landscape. One church is placed on the symbolic fish of Maui representing the North Island; in the other church work, a kereru is featured flying high above. Fran Dibble Works Fran has also mixed old and new for this exhibition, featuring an older work from 2011, and two new studies on board. The works use a variety of paints mixed with bronze as separate panels or elements. They play with the juxtaposition of different media to make an interesting aesthetic balance. Extending the “book series” that Fran started at the beginning of…
Jack's Back - New Paintings by Jack Register QSM
| Venue: | Taylor-Jensen Fine Arts, 33 George Street |
|---|---|
| Phone: | 06 355 4278 |
| Dates: | Saturday 15th June ‒ Saturday 29th June |
Jack Register is back! Back from what you may ask? Back from a summer of painting – almost every day, outside (Plein Air) – Foxton Beach, McKenzie Country, Palmerston North, Rangitikei River, the Manawatu and more. Jack is also back to full health. Having suffered a potentially life-threatening illness almost two years ago Jack had to drastically slow down his art production. His recuperation required several operations, hospital stays and many days of forced rest. His illness could have ended his career but Jack Register is now strong enough to resume painting and put his art career back on track. Jack’s Back celebrates his return to the easel and to ‘plein air’ painting. The artist is approaching the future with new enthusiasm for life and for the God-given gift of artistic talent. The exhibition is a mini-retrospect of paintings by this iconic artist who was awarded a Queens Service Medal (QSM) in 2008 for his services to art and music. Displaying both his artistic abilities with watercolour and…
