Feature Street about to be Completed
The final stage in the redevelopment of one of the city’s most attractive arterial routes begins next week.
The City Council is ready to upgrade and beautify the final portion of Fitzherbert Avenue from Ferguson Street to the Square.
Over the last few months a new sewer, laterals connecting business premises to the sewer and 30 metres of a new stormwater pipe have been installed and now the Council wants to redevelop the roadway above.
The work involves:
- Central median parking
- Distinctive surface treatment for the central parking
- Tree planting in the central median strip
- Resurfacing the complete carriageway
- New kerb and channelling and footpaths
- Streetscaping including street furniture.
The $400,000 upgrade, which has attracted Land Transport New Zealand (Transfund) financial assistance, will begin on Tuesday, June 7, and is projected to finish by the end of August.
The City Council has discussed the upgrade with adjacent retail and business premises and this week is sending them a letter informing them that work is about to begin.
Contracts Engineer, Rob Cuff, is also advising business houses that where access could be restricted during the replacement of vehicle crossings, the Council will contact them on a case by case basis to discuss the issue prior to work being done.
Rob Cuff explains that Fitzherbert Avenue is part of the roading network renewal programme for the city. The final section will take on a unique appearance consistent with the upgrading planned for other areas of the CBD.
The Council is progressively developing the ring road to enable through traffic to bypass the Square leaving the CDB for motorists wishing to park, pedestrians and cyclists who want to access the Square and its environs for business and retail activity and to enjoy the entertainment and café scene.
While further work is programmed in the future to improve intersections along Fitzherbert Avenue, next week’s work will complete the upgrade of the feature boulevard from the bridge through to the Square.
