Four violins win Manawatu District Contest
The Areall Quartet from Palmerston North Girls’ High School won the Manawatu District Contest of the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contests last night (Wednesday 8 June).
The group members are Ellen and Alena Hume, Alicia McNeill and Remy Irvine. They performed ‘Divertimento for Four Violins’ by Bertold Hummel.
Members of Areall Quartet received the Chamber Music New Zealand prize of $100 each.
Trumpet player Iaan Wilson adjudicated the Manawatu District Contest. Iaan said that there was a very high standard of performance in all three sessions.
The adjudicator’s award was won by GH Blues, a group from Palmerston North Girls’ High School.
Highly commended groups were Strait (St Peter’s College), Polished Brass, Tripella (Palmerston North Boys’ High School) and El Sueno (Awatapu College).
Manawatu District Contest Organiser Roderick Thomas said “the standard of performance continues to improve year by year. The winning group selected a challenging modernist work and clearly showed great enjoyment in playing it.”
District Contests nationwide are being held in 14 centres this month and run until mid-June. At the conclusion of the contests, the adjudicators will meet to select up to eight groups nationwide to compete in the National Final, held in the Auckland Town Hall on Saturday 6 August. (Winning a District Contest does not necessarily secure you a place in the National Final.)
In presenting the New Zealand Community Trust Chamber Music Contest, Chamber Music New Zealand acknowledges and funding from the New Zealand Community Trust and Creative New Zealand.
