KIMBOLTON School has been recognised for its work in raising awareness of local landmark Kimbolton Bush by receiving a highly commended award nomination from Environment Minister Marian Hobbs at the Green Ribbon Awards in Wellington on June 9.

Working closely with Horizons Regional Council, the Department of Conservation and the community, the team has been involved in preserving the reserve. Through information sheets and presentations the pupils have shared their knowledge and passion with their community, other schools and interested groups and have also taken guided tours through the bush reserve.

The awards have been running for 15 years and are presented annually in June, to tie in with World Environment Day. "The Green Ribbon Awards give national recognition for outstanding local initiatives," Marian Hobbs said.

The Ministry for the Environment administers the awards with the assessment criteria including whether the people or projects address a significant environmental issue, improve the environment, provide a model for others, go above and beyond "the call of duty", or introduce something new or innovative.
