Halcombe
Introduction
A prominent feature of Halcombe is its war memorial right in the middle of town. Around this lies a small district of about 500 people, mainly involved in the agricultural sector. The township lies in a slight valley, allowing expansive views across the buildings of the centre from both sides of the settlement.
History
Halcombe was one of the three towns established as part of the European settlement of the Manchester Block. Arthur William Follett Halcombe was the on-the-spot agent for the Emigrant and Colonists’ Aid Corporation – the private company responsible for bringing immigrants from the British Isles to settle in Manawatu.
Building roads and a railway was the first work available for many of the settlers who arrived in the Manchester Block, and it was work on the railway that brought the first immigrants to Halcombe in April 1876. An important feature of the groups that settled in Halcombe is that a number of them came from Germany, Scandinavia and other European countries – descendants of some of those families still live in the area today.
