Pohangina Valley Driving Route

This is a round trip from Ashhurst or any other starting point with much to do - enough to warrant staying overnight en route, but still easily achievable in one day. The route departs Ashhurst up the Pohangina Valley, skirting the Ruahine Forest Park to Apiti, down to Kimbolton, Feilding and finishing in Ashhurst – or where ever you started!
Note that it will be very useful to take a map on this route, as there are many country roads breaking off the route.
After looking at points of interest in Ashhurst, depart North along Pohangina Rd. 10 kilometres north, there is the option of taking the Pohangina Valley East Rd or continuing straight ahead on the Pohangina Valley West Rd. Both have great historical and natural attractions. The Pohangina Valley West Rd goes through the historical settlement of Pohangina itself.
Both the West and the East roads will take you to Apiti, although careful map reading is required. At Apiti, head south west along Oroua Valley Rd, on to Kimbolton Rd, through Kimbolton, then make your way back towards the starting point.
This route can be shorten by simply doing a loop in the Pohangina Valley itself, up one side and down the other.
Along this route there are opportunities to stop at cafes and bars, take short walks in reserves, including the Totara Reserve and the Pohangina Scenic Reserve, and absorb interesting historical points that are well signposted. There are many variations to explore, all are 
beautiful adventures through classic rural New Zealand.
